Open day season begins with… module Pokemon?

Does it have a start? An end? I’ve literally no idea. All I know is we’ve got dates going in the diary for our Autumn and Winter Open Days and, going into ‘the season’, I wanted to give students something to remember us in the longer term.

I get it, kids leaving school these days have a lot of things to think about. On the one hand, there are a load of universities fighting for their attention, and probably as many people telling them they have to go to university as there are telling them it’s a waste of money.

From my perspective, I know the Digital Video Production and Marketing BA at University of Salford is a great option for any student looking to study content production and brand marketing, and I truly believe (and have been told) that what we offer is quite a unique and essential course. But how do you make sure that the potential students (and their parents) remember what they heard at our Open Day three months, six months… or even a year from now.

Having a course page is great, as students can go back and remind themselves any time of the course and its modules. Having a landing page and a set of social media channels is wise too, but those things take a lot of maintenance. What I was keen to do was to give the students something tangible, but also useful that they could take away with them… even if they just chucked it in a drawer to rediscover it later when they were making that all important decision about their future.

The core of any degree is the modules themselves, and students want to know that they are getting a good range of teaching with assessments and activities that reflect industry. There’s also a lot of other information to remember, from the module titles to the credit weightings and special features. So, inspired by my own son’s obsession with Pokemon I figured… what if you could contain all of that information on a pocketable deck of cards? And what if you created a landing page with a simple URL, that could make getting to our course page a little easier? And, what if you combined those things?

Using the in-house colour coding of our course brand, which uses our university brand red to indicate year one (level 4), yellow to indicate year two (level 5) and green for year 3 (level 6), our module trading cards offer a little snapshot of what students can expect from each of their modules. Important information like which trimester, assessment details and some of the more important features of the module are also included – all captured in a fun little card deck.

For the 60-credit Final Project module, the card was designed to look a little more like a more powerful Pokemon card with a unique design of its own. The cards were packaged in a bespoke cardboard case too, reminding students to visit the new studyDVPM.com landing page if they wanted to find out more or attend an open day. We had 100 of the decks printed up to give away to students at Open Days, and for any college visits we might do in the future – and so far they have been going down a storm!
